Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "V.I. Razumovsky Saratov State Medical University" of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation

Saratov State Medical University is one of the oldest universities in Russia. It was founded in 1909. At that time Saratov State Medical University was organized as the only faculty of the University which was the 10th in Russia. The founder and the first Rector was Professor Vassily Razumovsky, an outstanding surgeon. He is considered to be the founder of a neurosurgery school in Russia. In 1909, 93 students were admitted to the University. Only men were allowed to study. The education was paid. Several Departments in the basic sciences were opened. They were Physiology, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, General Surgery. Then, in 1911 a new group of Departments started to function — Pathological Anatomy, Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy, Histology, General Hygiene, Forensic Medicine. Many outstanding Russian scientists worked at the Medical Faculty: Prof. A. Bogomolets, prof. S. Spasokukotsky, prof. S. Mirotvortsev. In 1930 reorganization in the field of education in Russia was carried out and many independent Institutes were organized. The Medical Faculty of Saratov University became an independent Medical Institute. Three faculties were organized — Medical, Sanitary-Prophylactic (but it soon stopped its existence) and Care of Mother and Child (which was soon renamed as a Faculty of Pediatrics). By 1935 the Institute had about l600 students. In 1939 one more faculty was founded — the Faculty of Training Military Physicians — specialists for Army service. But during the World War II it stopped functioning and resumed its work only in late fifties. After the World War II many new Departments were opened — mainly for the Faculty of Pediatrics — Propedeutics of Pediatric Diseases, Internal Diseases and Surgery for pediatricians. In 1961 one more faculty started its work. It was the Faculty of Postdipioma continuing education. It was meant for refresher training of specialists, as well as for interns, residents and postgraduates. Once in 3—5 years specialists should take the refresher courses. The population of Saratov is about 1 mln. people, it lacked qualified dental service and in 1988 it was decided to open a Faculty of Dentistry. So in the beginning of 90s Saratov Medical Institute had the following faculties — Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pediatrics, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of postdiploma education and that training military doctors. In 1993 the Institute was again renamed and got the original name of the University. First foreign students appeared in 1991. The first batch consisted only of Indian students. Now 500 students from different foreign countries are studying at the University. Since the year of its foundation the University follows the classic system of training medical students.

Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Academician I.P. Pavlov First St. Petersburg State Medical University" of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation

The Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University was founded in September 14 (26) 1897 as the Medical Institute for Women. It was the first institution both in Russia and Europe that provided an opportunity for women to acquire higher medical education. Soon after its foundation, the Women’s Medical Institute (WMI) became a reputable institution and represented a recognized model for higher medical education and medical science. Clinics and departments of the WMI developed and implemented the most advanced methods of diagnostics and treatment. Our University has changed a few names since the time of its foundation: the Women’s Medical Institute of St. Petersburg (1918), The First Medical Institute of Leningrad, also known as ‘the 1st Med’ (1924). This name went down in history of St. Petersburg and Russian medicine. In 1936 the First Medical Institute was named in honor of the Nobel Prize winner Academician I. P. Pavlov. In 1994 the First Medical Institute was reorganized into a medical university and got the name Pavlov Saint Petersburg State Medical University. In 2013, the word ‘first’ was returned to official name of University. In the 1930s the Institute of Chemistry and Pharmacy as well as the Institute of Pediatrics were detached from the First Medical Institute and established as independent units. In the meantime construction of new units and laboratory buildings were already in the design phase but the Second World War bothered to fulfill that plan. During heroic wartime defense of Leningrad the Institute did not stop providing patient care, education and research; many of its graduates went to war. We revere the memory of our graduates killed in battle. In 1987 a monument in honor of the fallen doctors was erected in the Institute Park, in the very same place where an unexploded bomb had been found. The 1960–1980’s were marked by a large-scale construction of new academic buildings, dormitories, research laboratories, thus, ‘the 1st Med’ gained its present day appearance. In the 1990s, a number of departments evolved into Research Institutes. Today the University continues improving patient care, medical education and science.

Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Yaroslavl State Medical University" of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation

The medical university in Yaroslavl was established during the years of the Great Patriotic War. At that time, many doctors and faculty members from medical institutes evacuated from the western regions of the USSR — primarily from Belarus — were located in Yaroslavl. To train medical personnel who were in high demand both at the front and in the rear, the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR issued a decree on May 22, 1943, establishing the Belarusian Medical Institute in Yaroslavl. The institute was formed on the basis of the Minsk and Vitebsk medical institutes. Professor Z.K. Mogilevchik from the Minsk Medical Institute was appointed as the director. In the summer of 1944, the government decided to re-evacuate the Belarusian Medical Institute. At the same time, the Council of People’s Commissars issued directive No. 16 725-r on August 15, 1944, establishing a new institution in Yaroslavl — the Yaroslavl Medical Institute (YMI). Many faculty members who had worked at the Belarusian Medical Institute remained at YMI — including I.M. Perelman, I.M. Vertkin, A.A. Lipmanova, S.A. Botvinnik, I.M. Turetsky, and others. Many students who had begun their studies in 1943 at the Belarusian Medical Institute also continued their education in Yaroslavl. On October 2, 1944, the first classes at YMI officially began. The first rector of the Yaroslavl Medical Institute was Doctor of Medical Sciences Vladimir Georgievich Ermolaev (1899–1972), author of dozens of scientific works. He had to lead the institute through extremely difficult times. Under his leadership, the academic and scientific foundations of the institute were built virtually from scratch, a teaching staff was assembled, and numerous everyday challenges were addressed. Despite the hardships of its early days, scientific research work began at the university from the very start. In 1946, the first academic conference of YMI faculty was held, and in 1947, the first student research conference took place. V.G. Ermolaev headed the institute until 1949. In 1963, the university established a Dissertation Council for awarding the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. Since 1994, the institution has borne the name Yaroslavl State Medical Academy. In November 2014, it was granted university status.
